Just because: the very first Day-Date your editor ever bought, a 18078 with diamond dial. Sadly long gone.
Board Talk: great topic about the love-it-or-hate-it bark Rolexes. Some stunning pieces being shown! The very first Day-Date I bought was a 18078.. I will try to dig up a picture.
Follow-up: the Antiquorum March 17 2013 auction.
A few days ago I posted some interesting watches to be featured in Antiquorum’s March 17 2013 auction. Well.. the results are in! Tip of the hat: the 1831 did a stella(r) job…
First Day-Date in this auction was to be found in lot 82: this 18078 with unusual dial. It fetched 13.750 CHF including buyers premium, nicely within its estimate of 10-15k CHF. At a little over 10k in EUR, the added value posed by the dial can be considered at around 5k.
The platinum 1804 with paper, lot 527, reached 38.750 CHF including buyers premium, well over the estimate of 18-28k CHF.
But without a single doubt the star of the show was this 1831 in lot 530, weighting in at a whopping 206.500 CHF including buyers premium. Let’s just say the original estimate of 25-35k CHF was -erhm..- conservative. The price is also considerably more than the previous 1831 which was sold. In Christie’s May 16th 2011 auction, that one fetched 147k CHF.
The 1831 can be considered not only a holy grail for Day-Date collectors, but also a very important watch in Rolex history. Said to be made in no more than 8 examples at the request of the Shah of Iran, it is one of the rarest references to have been made by Rolex.

Spotted: interesting lots at Antiquorum’s March 17 2013 Important Modern & Vintage Timepieces. I will leave the judgment up to you – just sharing.
Rolex Day-Date 18078 with unusual dial;
Mind-boggling lot sold by Antiquorum in 2007. Although the lot fetched a respectable 1,743,000 HKD, one might wonder wether the set wasn’t sold a few years too early, given the current spike in interest in the Rolex Day-Date. Click the link above for a full description of the lot.
