The recent Christie’s sale was quite mindblowing – I watched a good portion of it via the live stream at Christie’s website and was rather smitten by the results.

Whilst browsing I came across a nice read on Hodinkee.com about the auction – check it out at http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/that-time-a-rolex-explorer-sold-for-182000

Rolex Day-Date 1803

Rolex Day-Date 1803

Just because: Rolex Day-Date 1803

Funny – while browsing old Bonhams auctions I came across this strange-looking 1803 with ruby-set markers. Sadly this is the only image and there is no additional info.. Likely post-production, but nonetheless an interesting look. Why would the SCOC text be missing?

Follow-up: the Antiquorum March 17 2013 auction.

A few days ago I posted some interesting watches to be featured in Antiquorum’s March 17 2013 auction. Well.. the results are in! Tip of the hat: the 1831 did a stella(r) job…

Rolex Day-Date 18078

Rolex Day-Date 18078

First Day-Date in this auction was to be found in lot 82: this 18078 with unusual dial. It fetched 13.750 CHF including buyers premium, nicely within its estimate of 10-15k CHF. At a little over 10k in EUR, the added value posed by the dial can be considered at around 5k.

Rolex Day-Date 1804

Rolex Day-Date 1804

The platinum 1804 with paper, lot 527,  reached 38.750 CHF including buyers premium, well over the estimate of 18-28k CHF.

Rolex Day-Date 1831

Rolex Day-Date 1831

But without a single doubt the star of the show was this 1831 in lot 530, weighting in at a whopping 206.500 CHF including buyers premium. Let’s just say the original estimate of 25-35k CHF was -erhm..- conservative. The price is also considerably more than the previous 1831 which was sold. In  Christie’s May 16th 2011 auction, that one fetched 147k CHF.

The 1831 can be considered not only a holy grail for Day-Date collectors, but also a very important watch in Rolex history. Said to be made in no more than 8 examples at the request of the Shah of Iran, it is one of the rarest references to have been made by Rolex.
